This elegant Victorian pendant is carved from genuine Whitby jet, the celebrated fossilized wood found along the Yorkshire coast of England and one of the defining materials of nineteenth-century mourning jewelry. The pendant displays a finely sculpted Gothic Revival silhouette with scrolling foliate terminals framing a raised central architectural motif, all executed in richly polished jet that reflects light with a soft, velvety luster.

Suspended from a later 9ct gold bail, the pendant beautifully demonstrates the skilled craftsmanship of Whitby workshops during the height of the Victorian mourning tradition. The substantial carving highlights jet's unique ability to hold crisp detail while remaining remarkably lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Whitby jet became internationally fashionable after Queen Victoria adopted it following the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Unlike black glass or vulcanite, genuine Whitby jet is an organic gemstone formed from the fossilized remains of Jurassic monkey puzzle trees over 180 million years ago. It was prized not only for its elegant appearance but also for its symbolism of remembrance, protection, and enduring love.

Today, authentic carved Whitby jet remains highly sought after by collectors of Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly examples displaying architectural Gothic ornamentation and retaining their original sculptural form.
