This rare Victorian mourning bracelet exemplifies the deeply personal commemorative jewelry popular during the nineteenth century. The bracelet is formed from an intricately hand-plaited band of woven hair, preserved in remarkable condition, and secured by a circular glazed locket clasp mounted in warm-toned 9ct gold.

At the center, beneath a crystal cover, lies a carefully arranged lock of hair worked into an elegant radiating design, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship associated with Victorian hairwork. The reverse of the clasp is plain polished gold, allowing the sentimental focal point to remain the preserved hair specimen.

Hair jewelry occupied a unique position within Victorian culture. Unlike gemstones or precious metals, hair offered a tangible and enduring connection to a loved one. Such pieces were often commissioned following bereavement, though they could also commemorate family relationships, friendships, or significant life events. The intricate weaving and preservation techniques required considerable skill, frequently undertaken by specialist artisans.

The survival of both the woven hair bracelet and the enclosed hair locket makes this a particularly evocative example of Victorian sentimental jewelry, embodying the era's fascination with memory, mourning, and the preservation of personal connections.
